Volcanism has produced some of the
main tourist attractions in New Zealand, and their number,
diversity and activity will place them high in the 'to-do'
list of all nature sightseers.
Volcanism has affected most of New Zealand throughout geological
history. That activity has been especially frequent and
intense in the last hundred thousand years and until present.
The largest known eruption in the world was at Taupo about
22500 BC, and the largest known geyser erupted at Waimangu
for some years until 1904.
New Zealand still is one of the few places in the world
with active geysers. It is easy to visit active volcanoes,
and there are many other interesting volcanic features to
discover. |
