VISITING THE NEW ZEALAND COASTS

White-sand and black-sand beaches, harbours large and small, spectacular fiords, valleys drowned by the sea: these are some of the coastal features that can easily be visited in New Zealand. The two main islands are long, and a rich geological history has resulted in a wide diversity of coastal landforms. The native vegetation and wildlife further enhance the attraction of these coasts.

As a result, nature sightsee-ers will be able to find interesting coastal features in all regions.
However a number of outstanding areas have been outlined, based on their unusual character, remarkable diversity, scenic values, or locally rich wildlife.
