Project
K presented by themselves:
"Project
K is an exciting journey of discovery through which young people
achieve a strong sense of purpose and a measurable increase of
self worth. We develop and supply programmes to agreed community
- focused groups for their delivery and provide ongoing support
as required.
How
Project K Works
The programme aims to inspire young people to be positive and
focused using a 3-part process.
School
Liaison
Schools identify a team of teachers who will aid in the selection
and ongoing support and monitoring of the students.
Selection
All fourth form students complete a recognised survey which identifies,
in conjunction with teacher referrals, kids who are not utilising
their ability to the fullest extent.
stage
1 - Wilderness
Experience
The wilderness is used initially as a training medium, to break
down barriers and open the students up to their real potential.
As well as teaching outdoor skills, this stage begins the goal
setting process and teaches team work and self reliance.
stage
2 - Community Experience
This stage allows the students to transfer the skills and confidence
gained in the wilderness into their communities. It challenges
students to explore the resource and support available in their
local area, and encourages them to take the first steps towards
achieving their goals. These personal goals are described in a
signed agreement between the student, Project K and the student's
mentor.
Stage 3 - Mentoring
Each student is linked with a trained mentor who will support,
encourage and help them sustain the life changes made during the
course. This relationship continues for at least 12 months. The
student is also supported during this stage by school liaison
staff and community organisations.
It's
all about.... Community
Our vision is a community "driven and run" programme, drawing
on the culture and resources of each community. All components
of the course can be made community specific and we see our programme
acting as a cohesive force in the community, assisting to coordinate
the efforts of other agencies (government and private) for the
benefit of young people. The course is free to all young people
who need it.
