THE TONGARIRO CROSSING

Taranaki Falls. Photo NC.

Here the Wairere Stream falls 20 m (65') down the edge of one of Ruapehu's lava flows.
The main track continues above the falls, but an alternative route of similar distance takes a lower track back to Whakapapa Village. The stream is followed for about half the way, mostly through mountain beech forest, before veering south for the last few hundred metres through tussock. The Upper and Lower Cascade falls are passed on the way. Read more about the Taranaki Falls walk.
