This hut is also part of another superb major
tramping trip: the Round the Mountain Track, which takes trampers
on a big loop around Ruapehu. At this point the Tongariro Northern
Circuit heads west towards the Tama Saddle and then Whakapapa
Village, while the Round the Mountain Track heads due south into
the Rangipo Desert.
The mountain beech forest seen here makes a single block with
that found in the Waihohonu Valley (view
24). There are a few more similar isolated patches of forest
nearby.
