THE TONGARIRO CROSSING

Band of white steaming rocks high on the eastern side of Red Crater. Photo NC.

This phenomenon occurs in several places at the summit of Red Crater and around its sides. Enhanced by a distinctive smell of sulphur, the steam plumes are currently the most obvious sign of volcanic activity on Red Crater. They can be visible from quite a distance, and contribute to the super-natural effect of the park.
