THE TONGARIRO CROSSING

Ketetahi Hut and the Ketetahi Hot Springs. Photo NC.

The Ketetahi Hot Springs are one of New Zealand's major geothermal areas. Surface activity includes over 40 fumaroles, boiling springs and mudpools.
However they remain a private enclave within the park. Visitors are asked to maintain the tapu (sacredness) of the springs by not visiting them and not bathing in them.
