THE TONGARIRO CROSSING

On the way to Ketetahi Hut, looking north towards Lake Rotoaira (centre), and Lake Taupo (background). Photo NC.

After Blue Lake the track continues on a gentle but long descent towards Ketetahi Hut and the end of the trip at Ketetahi carpark, on the Lake Rotoaira Road.
The hills visible here immediately north of Lake Rotoaira are for the most part included within an outlying section of Tongariro National Park. Both Kakaramea (on left) and Tihia (on right) are volcanic centres. An important geothermal area is located on the northern side of Tihia, at Tokaanu.
