THE TONGARIRO CROSSING

Trampers resting at Emerald Lakes. Photo NC.

The bright blue green of the lakes both contrasts sharply with and complements the already vivid range of ochre, black and grey hues displayed in the rocks around Red Crater. Fumeroles are visible on the slopes in the upper right of the picture.
Coming just after the steep ascent from Mangatepopo and followed by the long descent to Ketetahi Hut and carpark, the Emerald Lakes offer the most attractive of resting places
