This is the top end of the
Whakapapaiti Valley walk, close to the Top of the Bruce road.
In this view the Round the Mountain Track veers sharply right
across the upper valley basin. At this point it enters the Hauhungatahi
Remote Experience Zone (formerly called Hauhungatahi Wilderness
Area). This elevated location high above the tree line provides
an impressive view over Ruapehu's upper volcanic landscape.
Former lava flows have left a succession of large bluffs stretching
across the upper slopes of the mountain. Lying in the path of
the numerous streams that flow down the slopes of Ruapehu, these
bluffs are the cause of many waterfalls in this area.
