Lake Surprise is perched at
approximately 1360 m (4462') on top of a lava flow which dominates
the Mangaturuturu Valley on its northern side. After the lake
the track drops steeply into the Mangaturuturu Valley, with
the Mangaturuturu Hut appearing shortly after.
