FACILITIES PROVIDED

Category 1 huts: Great Walks.
Here: Tongariro Northern Circuit (and Tongariro Crossing)
They have bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses, water supply, hand washing facilities and heating facilities with fuel available. There are gas cookers in summer. Wardens are present in the summer season to provide park and weather information.

They have bunks or sleeping platforms with mattresses, water supply, toilet and hand washing facilities. They may have cooking and heating facilities and often a warden.

Camping
Camping is prohibited within 500 metres of the tracks. Campsites have been established near each of the huts on the circuit. Facilities at the huts can be used.

Emergency shelters
They are for emergency use only: overnight use is only permitted in emergency situations.
Dome Shelter is located on Dome Ridge overlooking Ruapehu crater. Mangaturuturu Shelter is located near the Mangaturuturu Glacier on the western slopes of Ruapehu, above Turoa Skifield.

PASSES AND BOOKINGS

Tickets or annual passes must be purchased prior to spending the night in a hut. They are available at Department of Conservation offices, Visitor Centres and some other outlets.
Bookings are required all year round or during the peak season for huts on the most popular tracks. They can be made online. click here for details

RUBBISH DISPOSAL

There is a 'pack it in, pack it out' policy within Tongariro National Park. Rubbish is one of the greatest threats to our natural areas. You are asked to carry out what you carry into huts.
