TRANSPORT

Get there by road: Whakapapa Village is 346 km (by SH 3) or 381 km (by SH 1) from Auckland, 341 km from Wellington, 102 km from Taupo.

Get there by bus: From Auckland, Wellington, Taupo, Turangi. To National Park, Whakapapa Village, Ohakune.

To tracks: In season, several private shuttle services operate from Whakapapa Village to the start and end of the Tongariro Crossing track. Also direct bus service from Taupo and Turangi to the Tongariro Crossing.

Carparks: Avoid leaving your vehicle overnight in isolated places, as well as leaving valuable inside it. You can leave your vehicle at Whakapapa Village, Taupo or Turangi and use alternative transport (bus or shuttle) to the start of the Tongariro Crossing track.
