The relationship between Plate Tectonics, volcanism and mountain-building in the North Island: the subduction of the Pacific Plate underneath the Indian-Australian Plate generates a hot spot in the Earth's crust, causing volcanism in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and the Tongariro Volcanic Centre in particular.
