ENDANGERED BIRDS NOW ON TIRITIRI MATANGI ISLAND - 3

STITCHBIRD (Highly Endangered) . Last natural surviving population existed only on Little Barrier Island. Also on Kapiti and other predator-free offshore islands. Predators: Cats and black rats.

TAKAHE (Highly Endangered) - A total population of less than 200 birds - Approximately 140 birds exist in the wild in the Fiordland Mountains area - Some breeding at Burwood Sanctuary and a few at Mt Bruce on the mainland. Some on Maud, Mana and Kapiti Islands, and over 20 on Tiritiri Matangi . Threats: Deer competing for food, predation by stoats.
