BIRDS OF TIRITIRI MATANGI ISLAND

Seventy-six species of birds have been seen on or close to Tiritiri:

  • Seven of these are endangered species in New Zealand (transferred to the island)
  • Nineteen birds, endemic or indigenous to New Island Zealand, may be seen on or near Tiritiri, but are not known to breed on the island
  • Twenty-seven birds, endemic or indigenous to New Zealand, rnay be seen on or near Tiritiri and are known to breed on the island
  • Twenty-one birds that have been introduced into New Zealand have found their own Above: A saddleback feeding on a grub.

ENDANGERED BIRDS NOW ON TIRITIRI MATANGI ISLAND - 1

BROWN TEAL (Threatened) . Over 1,000 exist on Great Barrier Island in the wild . A few live on some Northland rivers . Now on Tiritiri Matangi - Threats: Clearing of habitat, predation by stoats, cats and black rats.

RED-CROWNED PARAKEET (Threatened) - Common on most offshore islands . Uncommon in mainland forests , Now on Tiritiri Matangi - Threats: Competition for nest sites from other birds such as starlings. Predation by cats and stoats.

SADDLEBACK (Threatened) . The saddleback is now successful but only on offshore islands . The last natural surviving population only existed on Hen Island, but since 1965 they have been transferred to nine predator-free islands , Now on Tiritiri Matangi - Predators: Stoats, cats and black rats.
