STATUS AND CONSERVATION
Territorial local authority: Rodney
District Council.
Description and status: A small island (220 ha, 544 acres)
in the Hauraki Gulf. 5km (3 miles) to the east of the Whangaparaoa
peninsula, 29 km (18 miles) north of Auckland. Managed as an open
sanctuary. Scientific Reserve. Administered
by the Department of Conservation.
Ecological district: Inner Gulf Islands Ecological District.
Abstract of conservation achievements and objectives:

Kiore (polynesian rat) has been eradicated in 1993.

To restore a thriving indigenous ecosystem representative
of the inner Gulf, and capable of supporting a range of common and
threatened animal species, especially birds.

To allow translocation of species both to and from
the island as determined by a species recovery plan or an approved
species translocation proposal.

To control any weed species which has the potential
to significantly inhibit or alter the process of establishment of
indigenous plant communities.

To carry out effective fire control through publicity,
education, and suppression of wildfires.
