STATUS AND CONSERVATION
Territorial local authority: Auckland City Council.
Status: Rangitoto Island Scenic Reserve, administered by the Department of Conservation.
Ecological district: Rangitoto Ecological District. The island is the entire district.

Abstract of conservation achievements and objectives:

  • Opossums and wallabies have been eradicated by December 1995.
  • To prevent the re-introduction of animal and plant pest species that have been eradicated.
  • To carry out conservation programmes for threatened indigenous vascular plant species.
  • To reintroduce appropriate native species once habitat is restored.
  • To seek National Reserve or World Heritage Area status as part of the better protection of the Auckland Volcanic Field.
