BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Offshore islands

"The Department of Conservation manages or has interest in approximately 220 islands (larger than 5 ha - 12 acres in size) and numerous small islets and rock stacks."

"Because islands can be made free from pests, they are good places for caring for threatened species which can no longer live on the mainland."

"As knowledge and technology improves, so does our ability to remove pests from larger islands. For example, by developing rat eradication techniques on small islands such as Burgess Island (159 ha) and Tiri Tiri Matangi Island (196 ha) we are able to plan for removal of kiore from Codfish Island (1396 ha) to protect indigenous ecosystems and kakapo." Quote from Department of Conservation Fact Sheet 1996: Off-shore islands.
