FACTS AND
TERRITORIAL ORGANISATION

The department manages approximately a third of mainland New Zealand (about 7 million hectares or over 17 million acres), including:

  • the 13 national parks
  • the 20 forest parks
  • the reserves (about 3500)
  • 61.760 hectares (152.609 acres) of private land protected in covenants
  • the offshore islands of groups of islands
  • the marine reserves (about 1.093.788 hectares or 2.702.750 acres)
  • the track, huts and structures on that land
  • the 40 visitor centres
  • the department is responsible for over 500 actively managed historic reserves

 

  • The department has about 1400 permanent staff and up to 450 temporary and seasonal staff. It has 14 regional conservancies and 79 field centres and bases.
